Scary Mr. Serger
When I used to hear the word "Serger" I would cringe. I was scared of them and didn't know how to use them. One day I got brave and looked inside of one... even more terrified, I walk away.
After much encouragement from a friend, she convinced me that I needed one if I was going to be sewing all of these clothes. Boy was she right!!! You can only do so many french seams to hide ragged edges! So my love story with Mr. Serger began...
I first visited a bernina shop. I told the sales lady that I was new to sergers and admitted how petrified I was to use one. Excited to show me this amazing machine, she sat down and began a 2 hour long tutorial on the amazing Bernina serger. She went through details of threading, serging, and all of it's tricks.
I walked out of that Bernina door, away from a $2000 machine and headed to Walmart, where I purchase my first $178 Singer Serger. Maybe another day Bernina sales lady :)
I must say that I now love my Serger!!! It trim, stitches, and finishes seams beautifully. It cuts my sewing time in half. There are days me and Mr. Serger don't get along and his tension become a problem; however, with a little love I can get it back on track. Just like any relationship, you must be patience.
Over time, I have come to love Mr. Serger and now use it as much as my sewing machine! Can you believe that!! It sits on the same table as my beloved Bernina sewing machine and cost lots less! Of course, threading it the first few times were a pain, but it was hard to learn to ride a bike at first. Then once you get it, you can enjoy the happiness of sewing with bicycle speed, rather than walking.
I am not encouraging you to go out and purchase you a Mr. Serger right now, but do consider looking at them and maybe taking sometime to learn more about them. With a little bit of research, you can learn a lot! Now Mr. Serger is not perfect for everyone, but if you are making clothes like me... I promise you will NEVER regret buying one!
Although Mr. Serger and I have a love/hate relationship at times, it is mostly love and I am so thankful for the time it saves me and the fact that my clothes are just as pretty inside as outside :)
