how to do a blanket stitch.

The "Blanket" stitch is known for finishing the edge of blankets {hence the name}...

But it is an easy stitch that can be used on lots of projects.
I use it mostly in hand appliqueing, because it adds a pretty detailed edge.

So let's get started!

First insert the needle on the back of the fabric {i am using the edge of a shirt to show you}...

Push you needle out of the fabric at the edge of the blanket and pull your thread tight.
{If you are using the stitch on an applique just start at the edge of the fabric applique}

Next place your needle on the top inside the edge of your fabric...
{i did 1/4'' but this is your decision, based on how big your would like your stitch to be}

Now push your needle through and pull it up and in between the thread before pulling tight.

Repeat, placing your needle top inside the edge of your fabric

Again push your needle through and pull it up and in between the thread before pulling tight.

Pull the thread tight and this will create a loop on the outer edge of your fabric.

Repeat again...
Push your needle through and pull it up in between the thread

This is your blanket stitch!

Continue the stitch around your blanket or applique...
When you are finished, tie a knot and cut.

Happy Sewing!
